Oh boy, where to begin. I began playing guitar when I was like, eight years old, or something like that, playing my old shitty First Act Acoustic In like, October 2007, I saw an episode of South Park that got me interested in Guitar Hero. That Christmas, I was the proud owner of Guitar Hero II and III, which, honestly, changed my life, for without that, I wouldn’t have been interested in Guitar again, and I wouldn’t have began taking lessons. That March, I started learning theory at a local music shop, which honestly, taught me the basics needed for any song.
Spassm was not my first project, I had been screwing around with “music” for a while when I began Spassm. I had been making little thirty second MIDI clips in TabIt, converting in to MP3, and calling it and album. The first song I had ever written was actually not bad, it was a four minute instrumental. Around march 2010, I started posting on the “Your Music” board on the nine inch nails forum, where I got some brutually honest criticism, which, looking back on, is the best thing that ever happened to me musically. After a few weeks, I began work on the “All that could have been EP”, which, from what I know now, is just awful. The writing honestly wasn’t that bad, but the production was literally me using completely computer-powered plugins, and rock band microphones to record vocals. During the summer of 2010, I began actually recording guitar….and then something happened, I actually learned how to mix without it overall sounding like shit. In August, I wrote Destroyer Of Worlds, the song that got me working on The Penelope Rose. The entire album was inspired by one quote, actually from a signature in my favorite band, Coheed and Cambria,’s fan forum, Cobalt and Calcium. I began working on the backing concept for The Penelope Rose, and after getting criticism from Cobalt, I had a decent backing storyline. By October 2010, I had a good amount recorded for The Penelope Rose, and I was planning on releasing it on February 3rd….however, soon afterwords, I hit a creative block that basically kept me from writing or recording anything new until late January, which really set back production. In February, I released the first single from the album, Before It Matters, one of my personal favorites from the record. In Late February, as I was falling asleep, the lyrics for Prisoner Of Society came to me, and I had the song demoed by the next day. I had a Coheed friend, AJ, record vocals for it, and it turned out really good. Soon after, I contacted Neesh (of Cobalt, good friend of Coheed’s ex-drummer, etc), asking her if she knew of any indie labels looking to sign, and she told me she co-owned a label with Anthony Masington, so of course, I sent her my demo’s from the release, and she said she liked it, and wanted to sign Spassm for digital release, so of course I basically go “fuck yeah”, and sign with Oratorium Records. Towards the end of March 2011, I finally began finishing up the record, recording Only You and Happiness In Time.
